The world is your best teacher

There are a few things in life, which you can buy, enriching your soul and changing profoundly your personality. Traveling is one of those things.

Traveling is the best way to know oneself and at the same time, know different cultures, meet people with different dreams, different habits, different ways of saying the same thing.

“Traveling is the only thing you buy that makes you richer”

It challenges yourself, makes you stronger, makes you wiser, opens your mind and makes you breath fresh new air. And most of all, you can taste a different reality. Nothing compared with what you used to have on a daily basis. And, no, I’m not talking just about the food you will try (but this is still part of the experience).

Gaining self-confidence, trusting your intuition and seeing a new horizon: What a better way of learning new skills if not practicing something on first hand? And traveling has this magical power that gives you this ability. When in doubt, travel.

So, why is important to travel with your kids from their youngest age? It is the fastest way in developing qualities such as patience and openness in your children. Being open to accept other people’s reality as another way of seeing life, sometimes so different from what is one’s reality, has a positive impact on what  will make your kid stronger in life. Whether you believe their viewpoints or not, it may help you understand why others do what they do and the reasons they believe it is proper and correct to do them.

So let’s see the advantages of traveling. It is not just we, from #TheNowFamily, saying that traveling is fundamental in developing one’s personality. Important historical personality will put some light on this topic. Let’s give space to those who know better:

  1. “The World is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page.”

    Saint Augustine

And why should we stop at its first page? Curiosity is what keeps our brain awake, it is what sparks in us the mysterious and the unknown so different from what we used to be. What this quote’s message is that if you never go anywhere, you’ll have a very limited view of the world. Not all of us can travel the whole globe, but just making travel a priority- even to a new place a day’s drive away can open your eyes to new, unknown realities.

  1. “Travel, in the younger sort, is a part of education; in the elder, a part of experience.”

    Francis Bacon

The best way to educate your child is to involve him/her into the daily experience, by tasting the real flavour of life. Sir Francis Bacon advises us to make traveling part of the education. It is not enough to have the school education, which will never be a guarantee of the success. He also advises us in his writing essay to see the best of the country to be involved in. It is the quality of the travelling which changes the experience. Try to see the best of the country visited. Keep a journal for reflection, stay in contact with the people you had the opportunity to meet during the travelling. Live in the fullest.

  1. “Travel makes one modest. You see what a tiny place you occupy in the world.”

    Gustave Flaubert

When traveling you can experience “new Worlds” and realise that there is not just a reality. There are many ways of seeing the same problem and there are different problems according to the reality you live in. A big problem for you can be a small one for someone else. Traveling gives you the opportunity to revisit your values and your priorities in life. What a better way to teach your kids the art of analysis and of prioritising in life.

4.“The first condition of understanding a foreign country is to smell it.”

       Rudyard Kipling

The smells cannot be understood by reading a book about a country or by seeing it in a video. You have to experience them. Lose yourself among the streets of the new place you are in. Don’t be afraid to not find the right place that your guide advises you. Don’t be scared to ask for advice from locals on the streets. It’s the best way to experience the place. Never forget to smell before anything else. Smell the flowers around you, smell the food before enjoying it. Nothing bets these ones.

  1. “Don’t tell me how educated you are, tell me how much you travelled.”

Sometimes the most important lessons in life are the one learnt during a trip. It is the experience I had in Cube when listening to a young boy saying that his biggest dream was to eat a pizza full of stuff. Dreams and hopes are sized to one’s reality and can be revisited when travelling. Gratitude pops into my mind each and every time I think about this episode. I have dreams and hopes and they might be big or small but I never forget to be grateful for what I have.

6.“The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes.”

        Marcel Proust

When I wasn’t able to travel because of financial reasons or for personal reasons, I heard a person saying that not having time or money are just another excuse. That what we need is to travel even a few kilometres from our home to learn something new, or even to travel in the city you live in. I know every single small street of my city (and is an Italian country… streets are really small and narrow). This is another way of traveling into the culture of your home. Nothing beats curiosity.

  1. “The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing.”

    Albert Einstein

And is not just Einstein telling us to stay curious. There are many of notable personalities in our history giving an important role to curiosity. Curiosity aliments our life and makes us wiser.  Bruce Lee says: “You have to be willing to throw out what you already know and have a curiosity to explore new paths.  If your cup is already full, you can’t learn new things.” It is the main quality one should adopt when traveling. You can “travel” worlds and be a tourist in a 5-stars hotel and never learn something from the population and the life lessons the place can give to you. This is why tourists visit and travelers explore.

  1. “For my part, I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel’s sake. The great affair is to move.”

    Robert Louis Stevenson

Invite your kids to travel, to fall in love with the process, to open their eyes to new realities and never stop from doing so.

  1. “A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step.”

    Lao Tzu

Life is a journey itself and we have to start from somewhere, sooner or later we are all invited to follow the first step, to fail and to start again. There is no secret formula but there is an essential quality everyone needs to have and it is called curiosity.

  1. “Buy furniture when you are old.  Travel when you are young.”

Grandfather of a Travel Goal Getter Member

Family experiences around the world

Parents around the world are sharing their experience in traveling with their children and say “The best educational experience we’ve had traveling can’t be pinned to one event, one place. It’s a process, a journey of discovery and exploration as we learn together about the world ‘hands-on’.”

With the worl “Edventures” are defined the long-term trips where children learn on the road. Nomadic parents about the pros and cons of dropping out to travel the world. For many travelling families, homeschooling is not just a consequence of travel, but part of the attraction.

Overall, homeschooling is on the rise. Local authority figures released at the end of last year show a 65% increase in children recorded as home educated in the UK over six years.

There are many families choosing to travel around the world with their kids. One of them is Ingrid and Andrés, who with their project @elvuelodeapis (the bee’s flight) decided to leave everything behind and to take an adventure.

Bigger Minds, Smaller Egos

“We’re looking forward to uncomplicating our lives, stealing back a year and showing our kids how the rest of the world lives. Hopefully we’ll all come back with bigger minds and smaller egos.”– from Paul and Amanda at 6 Out of Oz

There Are More Ways Than One to Do Things

There are many families as 6 out of Oz choosing to travel around the world with their kids. We here in #TheNowFamily had the pleasure to meet Ingrid and Andrés, who with their project @elvuelodeapis (the bee’s flight) and three kids decided to leave everything behind and to go on an adventure.

Both teachers in the South of Spain, they decided it was time for a break and one year ago they have chosen a simple date. On 08/08/2016 they will start their trip around the world with their kids, three of them. No more excuses. They decided to leave behind the classrooms, their daily routine decided by the outer world without forgetting about the education.

In their fourteens and full of energy, Ingrid and Andrés, together with their three little girls: Nora, Cloe and Elsa are looking forward to travel to another part of the world. Learning from others and being curious is the main topic in this field. Anything that seemed impossible in this project could be solved by putting in motion creativity and imagination. With this everything is possible, all that can miss in this project can be solved with a bit of imagination and creativity. Their three girls: are looking forward to know another part of the world

Thanks to the values and educative ideals passed on to their girls, such as being independent, respect others and learn from the differences that can be found in nature and in people from various cultures, love for discovering new things, being responsible and much more, their girls will be able to put them in practice and experience the advantages of an open mind.

“We want lo let ourselves surprise by the beauty of other countries, by the hospitality of their people and we are sure South of America will be a great place for our kids to learn and to get the best of the experience”.

“Fear paralyze and life is way too beautiful to stay quite” El Vuelo de Apis

For the three sisters this is an extremely challenging situation. They will have to spend a lot of time together; in situation they never lived before, getting to know foreign people, new houses to live in. They have to collaborate more and forget about the fights they had back hope form time to time.

Thanks to their profession, working as teachers, Ingrid and Andrés will take charge of their girls’ education. Ingrid says:  “We don’t realize how lucky we are to have everything we have, so this experience will help our children to seize the reality, to form their personality by looking forward in achieving their goals in life, including their dreams.

She adds “ We started this project last year with zero euros and in one year we achieved to have enough money in order for us to be able to travel for a year. With a great dose of creativity and imagination, everything is possible. Nothing is impossible if there is determination and willingness to do it”.

We prefer to leave you on this note and to wish you all open minds to travel the world and to get a positive thinking towards life. And now you know how to spend your summer… Let’s travel #TheNowFamily.
